Blogs

How do I submit a blog?
Go to your homepage and click the "Blog" tab. Under that is another tab called "Write A Blog" ... Guess what you do there? Your friends, rivals and Fan U dwellers can comment, star and bomb your blogs on this tab too.

How do I edit an existing blog?
On your "Blog" tab on your homepage, you can edit an existing blog (or remove it entirely) by going to the "My Blog" tab and clicking the "Edit" or "Remove" options next to it's posted date. We'll also keep track of how many comments you got in that same area too.

Can I make my blogs viewable to my friends only?
Not right now. But be strong! Make your voice heard and share your insight, smack and rants with the whole community. We want to hear what you have to say!

How do I put a blog on a Team Page?
Make sure you tag your blog posts with the team's name you're blogging about -- make sure you use the school name, not the nickname (i.e. "USC" or "University of Southern California", not "Trojans") -- and we'll pull all the Fan U Nation's posts tagged for that team to the Team Page.

How do I tag a blog and why?
If you tag your blog properly, you'll be helping the site spread your wisdom to those that want to read it. For example, make sure you tag the school name(s) you're writing about so we can include it on that school's Team Page. Good tagging makes it easier for users to search the site and find your stuff.

Can I drag and drop My Blog to a friend?
Not yet, we're working on it.

Can I drag and drop someone else's blog to My Favorites?
Not yet, but we're working on it. You'll be draggin' and droppin' all kinds of stuff pretty soon.

My blog post is not showing up? Should I submit it again?
First you should clear the cache on your browser.

Why do I need to clear cache on my browser?
In order to speed up web browsing browsers are designed to download web pages and store them locally on your machine in an area called "cache." When you visit the same page for a second time, the browser speeds up display time by loading the page locally from cache instead of downloading everything again. This sometimes results in less than current versions of web pages being displayed. If you believe that you have a less than current version of a page, please follow the steps below to clear the cache in your browser.

How do I clear cache on my browser?
That depends on which browser you are using.

For Internet Explorer:

  • Up top in the pull-down menus (File, Edit, Tools etc.), click Tools, then 'Internet Options'

  • This brings up a dialog with 6 tabs across the top (General, Security, Content, ... )

  • Click 'General,’ then look for 'Temporary Internet Files'

  • Click 'Delete Files,' then (if it appears, check off 'Delete all offline content,' then click 'OK')

  • Click 'OK' again and this should clear all cached pages

    For Netscape:

  • Up top in the pull-down menus (File, Edit, etc.), click Edit, then 'Preferences'

  • Find 'Advanced,' Click the + sign in front of the word 'advanced'

  • You'll see 'Cache, Proxies, … '

  • Click 'Cache'

  • On the right you'll see, buttons labeled 'Clear Memory Cache' and 'Clear Disk Cache'

  • First, click 'Clear Memory Cache' when the "?" dialog appears click 'OK'

  • Then click 'Clear Disk Cache', when the "?" dialog appears click 'OK'

  • Click 'OK' again to close the Cache Dialog box

    For Firefox:

  • Click ‘Tools’ and select ‘Options’

  • Click the ‘Advanced’ icon and click the ‘Network’ tab

  • Click ‘Clear Now’ under the ‘Cache’ section

  • Click ‘OK’

  • Exit and re-launch the browser

  • For Safari 2.0 for Macintosh:

  • Click the ‘Safari’ menu and select ‘Empty Cache’

  • Click ‘Empty’ on the ‘Are you sure’ message box

  • Exit and re-launch the browser

How do I get my picture in my card?
Click "Edit photos" on the bottom right of your card (you gotta be signed in to see this option). On the right under "My Media" you will have four options, click on "Upload Photos." A prompt box will come up where you can enter your title, description and tag information as well as upload for the photo you wish to use in your card.

    My user name doesn't fit.
You might just need to use a shorter one. We've got a set amount of space for user names at this time.

How do I edit a profile?
On your profile page, to the right of "Profile" you will find "Edit" click on it and make any profile changes, then click "Back" when you are finished.

Can I make my profile private and seen only by my friends?
No. Sorry, but we may add that feature in the future.

    Drag & Drop

How do I drag and drop an item?
Well, you click on the item and drag it where you want it to be dropped. It's pretty basic really. And at Fan U, we're pretty big on dragging and dropping things.

What can be dragged and dropped on Fan U?
You can drag and drop our "Smackback" icons (the bomb and the star in your toolbar) and post comments to other users. You can also drag and drop user profiles into your toolbar to invite new friends and rivals. Pretty soon, you'll be dragging and dropping all kinds of neat stuff at Fan U.

How do I use drag and drop to invite a friend?
Click on my friends in your toolbar. Then, after you have found the profile of the friend or rival you want to invite, just drag their icon into the "Drag New Card Here" space in your toolbar. You will immediately receive a notification that an invite has been sent.

How do I use drag and drop to introduce one friend to another?
This feature will be available soon. You'll be able to simply drag one friend's icon onto another and we'll take care of the introductions. How cool will that be?

How do I use drag and drop to introduce one friend to all my friends?
    Same as above.

Can I send a photo or video to myself?
    Not at this time.

Can I send a photo or video to friend? To all my friends?
We are working on that feature as well.

How do I share my blog with a friend?
This feature isn't functional yet, but in time you will just click on the text of a blog and drag it to the "Share with all Friends" box in the "My Friends" section of your toolbar. Told you we liked dragging and dropping!

How do I drag and drop an Article to myself or a friend?
You just click on the text and drag it to the "Share with all Friends" box in the "My Friends" section of your toolbar.

Can I drag something from My Toolbar to a person's photo?
That function is not yet available.

    Friends and Rivals

How do I invite a friend?
From your new buddy's homepage, just drag their picture onto your toolbar and BAM! we'll send them an invite to become part of your posse. And make sure to check the "Friend Requests" area under your Alerts on the "Profile" tab of your homepage. That's where folks will be asking to add you to their friends.

Can I invite someone to be a Rival?
Let's get ‘em signed up on the site first using the "Invite" tab we talked about above, then you can put them in your Rivals list using the same "Friends" tab on your homepage. If you see someone you'd like to make a rival on your "My Friends" tab, select the checkbox next to their picture and then click the "Make Selected A Rival" at the bottom of the page. Then toss insults in their general direction.

How do I make a friend one of my Top Ten?
From the "Friends" tab on your homepage, click the "My Friends" tab under that. You can drag any of the friends at the bottom of this page (the little pictures) into one of the slots at the top (the big pictures) and you've made one friend happy and one jealous.

Can I change the order of my Top Ten?
Yes. On your profile page click the “Friends” tab (third one from the left). Click on the “Manage Friends” button under the “My Friends” tab. You can move any of your “Friends” into your “My Circle-Friends” just by dragging and dropping. To change the order of friends already in your top 10 you must drag them down to the “Friends” section then just drag them back in the spot you want them. Hey! Don’t forget to click the “Submit” button at the bottom or all your hard work will be for not.

Can someone be on my Friends list and Rivals list at the same time?
Like to live in gray areas do you? No, this isn't an option right now. Somebody once said "you're either with us, or against us!"

Can I drag a friend's profile to another friend's profile on My Toolbar to make introductions?
Yes. Drag Person A onto Person B and we'll take care of the rest.

How do I recapture a friend I accidentally deleted?
Find their homepage and drag their picture onto your toolbar. We'll reconnect you ... Assuming your friend accepts you into their inner circle again!

How do I invite a friend outside of FanU.com?
Easy, on your homepage (that's your homepage, not the Fan U homepage), click the tab called "Friends" and then the tab under that called "Invite" ... From there, you'll be able to shoot off email invites to all your rowdy buds and rivals with a custom message if you want.

Can I import my contact list from Gmail, Facebook or others?
Not yet, but we're working on it.

Can I block the view of any of my friends' from public view?
Ashamed of your peeps? That's not currently an option, but may be added in the future.

My new friend/rival is not showing up on my profile page. What should I do?
Try clearing your cache. See the above “Blogs” section of FAQ for information on cache and how and why you may need to clear your browser.

How do I find an existing group for my favorite teams?
First follow the instructions above. Once on the groups page, in the search box under “SEARCH GROUPS” enter in your team then click “GO.”

I can’t find a group that exists for my team, or one that I want to join. What can I do?
I don’t know maybe you could click on the “Start a Group” tab and create your own. But it’s up to you.

    Inbox

How am I notified I have something in My Inbox?
In your toolbar at the top of every page, right under your friends pictures, you'll notice a count of how many items are in your Inbox. Also on your homepage, under the "Profile" tab you'll see an area called "Alerts" ... Friend Requests, Smackbacks (or bombs dropped on you) and Messages are all detailed there as well.

    What is Compose?
I didn't take French in college, but I believe the "Compose" area of your Inbox is where you can create messages to send to other Fan U members. Give it a click and a familiar form should appear.

How do I forward a message received in My Inbox to my friends?
For now, you'll probably want to copy and paste it into a new message using the "Compase" link to the left of your Inbox. In the near future, you'll be able to drag and drop messages to friends in your toolbar.

How do I send a message to more than one friend?
It's not there yet, but pretty soon you'll be able to drag and drop messages to all your friends using a single "Send To All" icon in your toolbar.

How do I build a profile?
    See "Building Profile" section below.

How do I reply to a comment in my Guestbook?

How do I delete a Guestbook comment?
Easy, just click the “Remove” link to the right of the comment.

Can I block a person from placing a comment in my Guestbook?
Nope, but we are working on that one. Remember though, if you're gonna dish it, you gotta be able to take it!

Pretty much your entire social life ... at least on FanU.com. Blog posts, media posts, adding friends and all comments on your content. This shows up not only for you, but for all your friends to view.

Can I make My Activities private?
Got something to hide? You can't do this yet, however we're working on an option that will allow content to only be viewable to you and your friends.

How do I add more than one team to My Teams?
Jumping off your team's band wagon already? You can only have one team per sport, but you can change them as often as you wish.

    Polls

    How do I move teams?
On your homepage, click the "Polls" tab. If the team you want is already in the Top 25 list on the left, just click their school name and drag them up or down on the list and release. Easy. If they're not on the list already, use the dropdown options at the bottom to add them where you want to see them.

How do I load another poll into My Poll?
On your homepage, click the "Polls" tab. At the very bottom of the left side, click the "Add Top 25 From ... " dropdown and select an existing poll (AP, USA Today, etc.). The list above will refresh with that poll's current standings. You can drag and drop your choices from there.

Can I add any team to My Poll?
Yes. Use the dropdown options under the poll list on the left of the Polls page to tag Alcorn State as the #1 team in the country. Then go take a long look in the mirror ...

When is my poll due in order to make it part of the Alltel FanU Poll?
We're finishing up the weekly polls on Monday at noon right now. I'd try to fire that puppy in by the night before just to be on the safe side.

Can I drop a Bomb or a Star on a poll?
Judge away! You can drag the bomb or star icons from your Toolbar onto the Poll you want and you'll be prompted to leave that user a note on why you think their opinion stinks or rocks in their Guestbook.

How do I view previous weeks' polls?
Like to live in the past do we? Fan U is living in the here and now, but we understand if you want to see that one week your team snuck into the Top 25 before the season really got going. We're adding an option to look back at past polls, check back on the Polls pages soon.

How many times can I submit or edit my poll before it is included in the Alltel FanU Poll?
Update it as often as you want, on Monday at noon we grab it in whatever state it's in at that time and -- BAM! -- it becomes part of that week's Fan U Poll.

    Smackbacks

    What is a Smackback?
Just like when you had a substitute teacher in high school, you don't have to be quiet on Fan U. We want feedback, chat, smack, funk, boasts, brags and all that good stuff! When you see something that you have an opinion about, let people know you agree or disagree with them. Smackbacks allow you to do that.

What can I drop a Bomb or a Star on?
You can drop bombs or stars on blogs and in guest books, media and profiles.

How do I drag and drop a Bomb or a Star?
Go to the "Drag & Drop" section of your toolbar and drag on of the icons into the text portion of the blog. A box will show up where you can post your comments, then click "Leave Comments" and you've successfully dropped a bomb or star. Just don't drop the ball and forget to leave a comment!

Is there a limit to the number of characters in my Bomb or Star comment?
Right now there is not, but don't abuse our generosity!

How will I know if someone dropped a Bomb or a Star on me?
On your profile page, under "Friends" you have 3 notifications, "Friend Request" "Messages" and "Smackbacks," the latter of which has a bomb icon underneath. In red text to the right of each you will see a number, if it is anything other than a zero then you have had a bomb or star dropped on you.

How do I read Smackbacks sent to me?
Click on the "Smackbacks" or bomb icon on your profile page. You can preview all your smackbacks from there, then just click "read" after each one.

How do I report offensive Smackbacks?
Tattletale! Don't be alarmed, this feature is coming soon, check back for details. In the meantime, shoot us a note at support@fanu.com if someone is taking it too far.

Can I Bomb or Star an item more than once?
Yes, because sometimes something clever just doesn't come to you at the right time.

What are the point values for a Bomb or a Star?
A bomb is zero points, so be careful, they could be highly explosive. A Star can be worth anywhere from 1-5 points based on how the user wishes to rate the content. So it's all up to you, rate carefully.

How do I rate someone's content using the Star?
After you have dropped the star, as instructed above, in the box provided for the comments you will see "Rate" with five small stars that act as a rating system. If you agree a little with the content, click on the first star, if you totally agree then click on the fifth star and anywhere in between. So go forth and rate your fellow users ... but expect to be rated as well.
